Sago Palm
$39.99
The sago palm (Cycas revoluta) is a slow-growing, palm-like cycad, not a true palm, known for its stiff, dark green, feathery leaves and shaggy trunk, thriving in warm climates with well-draining soil and partial sun. It's a "living fossil" that's drought-tolerant once established but requires careful watering ( allowing soil to dry between waterings) and is highly poisonous if ingested, making it a hazard for pets and children.
Appearance & Growth
- Leaves: Rosette of stiff, shiny, dark green, pinnate leaves with spiny tips.
- Trunk: Thick, brown, and textured.
- Size: Slow-growing; can take 50 years to reach 10 feet, often acting more like a shrub.
- Reproduction: Produces male cones or female structures with bright orange seeds.
Care & Growing Conditions
- Light: Prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun; more shade leads to larger leaves.
- Water: Water thoroughly but allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out; overwatering causes root rot.
- Soil: Needs excellent drainage; sandy or loamy soil is ideal.
- Fertilizer: Use a balanced palm fertilizer during the growing season (spring/summer).
- Temperature: Prefers warm, humid conditions (65-85°F) and is hardy in USDA zones 8-11; protect from frost.
