Flax Lily Variegated, Dianella tasmanica, or Tasman flax lily, is a hardy, strappy perennial native to Australia and Tasmania, known for its grass-like foliage, small blue flowers, and blue berries. It thrives in well-drained soil and partial shade but is adaptable, tolerating full sun (especially in cooler climates), drought (once established), and various soil types, making it a versatile plant for borders, mass plantings, and containers, with popular variegated cultivars available.

Key Characteristics
• Foliage: Long, strap-like leaves, often with a red edge or creamy-white variegation in cultivars like 'Variegata'.
• Flowers: Small, pale blue to violet flowers in spring and summer.
• Berries: Bright, metallic blue berries follow the flowers, though they are toxic to humans.
• Size: Clumps can reach 1.5–2 feet tall and 3 feet long.

Growing Conditions
Prefers partial shade but tolerates full sun (especially in coastal areas) and dry shade.
Water regularly to establish, then reduce to occasional watering; drought-tolerant once mature.
Prefers well-drained, rich soil but is adaptable to clay and tolerant of salt.
Cold-hardy to about 20-25°F; established plants often regrow after frost.

Care and Uses
• Maintenance: Low-maintenance; cut back old foliage annually for a clean look.
• Uses: Excellent for borders, mass plantings, groundcover, and containers; deer and rabbit resistant.
• Propagation: Can be divided in early spring.
